Tsukikage Estate is my Final Major Project for the MA Game Arts and Design at the University of Hertfordshire.
The project is set in 1274 CE, during the Kamakura period, and takes inspiration from the grounded architectural and natural environments seen in games such as Ghost of Tsushima.
The idea behind the environment was to create a quiet, lived-in place that feels like it has a history of its own. The estate is built around everyday spaces such as the main houses, garden, pond, stable, storage areas, shrine, archery shed and training ground. I wanted the layout to feel practical and believable, while still leaving small details throughout the environment.
The project was also an opportunity for me to develop my environment art workflow, from building the modular architecture and creating custom trim sheets to producing materials, props and foliage. Most of the environment was created in Blender, Substance Painter and Substance Designer, and assembled and presented in Unreal Engine 5.
My main goal with Tsukikage Estate was simple: to build a believable place that feels peaceful at first but has a story underneath it.
