For this project, I wanted to challenge myself by learning and developing my hard surface modelling skills. I decided to work on something that felt both unique and technically challenging, which pushed me to explore new ideas and workflows.
While researching visual references and design inspiration, I came across a project featuring a robotic scorpion by MatStation Miniatures. Its complex structure and strong mechanical aesthetics immediately caught my attention. The layered armor, segmented body, and mechanical limbs made it an interesting subject for practicing hard surface modelling. Even though I wasn’t entirely sure how I would approach building such a complex model at the start, I wanted to challenge myself and give it a try.
A major inspiration behind the design was Victor Calleja. His artwork helped me better understand the anatomy and structure of a scorpion, especially how its form could be translated into mechanical components. Studying the direction, placement, and interaction of joints and sockets in his designs was particularly helpful in understanding how the robotic elements could realistically function and connect.
His ArtStation post played an important role in guiding my approach and development throughout this project, helping shape the way I interpreted and built the mechanical structure of the scorpion.
